OH. MY. GOSH!

Today was a celebration of the GHE community! You all are so amazing! What an incredible spirit there was out on the field today. I think it is safe to say that the 1st Annual GHE Turkey Trot was a resounding success! I am so incredibly grateful for all of the hard work and dedication and everyone of you!!  What a way to engage our parent community and contribute to the success of our PTA.
Thank you to all of our IAs who came out to support the students, cheering them on, and throwing color on the 4th and 5th graders. And sweating in mascot costumes! Freddy and the Weird Red Blob have never looked better or had better moves.
Incredible detail and planning went into the hype, communication, and "day of " details. So thank you to all of those committees.
Thank you to all of those who took photos and videos!

An awesome Freddy! (York)

Minding the Verbs; Increasing the Rigor!

Thank you so much for your engagement this week in reviewing the Columbus lesson. Your insights were really valuable and some of you spoke with me afterward and brought even more meaning to the task.  When we allow students to do the heavy lifting, we are increasing the rigor for them. As a school with many students who are high achieving, it is important for us to protect the rigor of the core and teach the standards as they are written. This particular lesson also brought to light how important it is for us to allow room for student perspectives and to not tell students how to think about certain issues. Students bring different life experiences and backgrounds that should be respected and can enrich the conversation for all.

Broken Records have their place

Beginning with the standards is not a new topic to all of you. We are all teaching from a set of standards which are written in such a way that we need to unpack them to glean what students should know and be able to do. We begin by examining the verb(s) in the standard. If we are only focused on the nouns then we run the risk of not rising to the rigor of the standard. If we are truly attending to the standard as it is written, and creating assessments that really allow students to demonstrate that standard, we will see good outcomes for students. I know that I have repeatedly mentioned this, but this is in an effort to maintain focus on the important things and not to add additional things to your plate. If we perfect what is important, results will follow.

Thank you to all of you for incentivizing your students to participate in the Turkey Trot. Regardless of the fundraising outcome for PTA, I feel as though this has been such an amazing fun team building activity for all of us and it could not be happening without all of you!
